Songbirds ease of use, many features, and sleek look make it my choice as the Best Free Media Player for Vista. It easily beats out Foobar2000, Media Monkey, Musikcube, and by far Winamp. The only media player to come close was Windows Media Player 11.

The only reason not to use songbird… System Resources. If your computer is already taking up to much system resources just running vista then you might want to stick with Windows Media Player. It uses a fourth of the system resources so you won’t slow down your computer any more.
The player also allows one to play streaming or download digital audio or video Internet content. Version 7.1 adds a facility called Windows Media Audio 8 encoding and decoding for use in portable devices. I found the article very interesting that.Thanks!!
I was surprised your list didn’t include either the VLC or bs-players. I haven’t tried the bs player yet but have heard good things about it from friends (uses little resources). The VLC player,imho is quite good. It isn’t sleek or pretty but it’ll play practically any media file.
I’ll take a look at the songbird player though just for giggles if nothing else. I agree with your assessment of Winamp and put it on the same level as WMP, yuck. Its a shame too as Winamp used to be a very good player I felt. Anyway, thanks for the article; I enjoyed my visit to your blog. Cheers!
